It is the more simple of the two bars. It is mostly useful for Pirates since it is used only in situations which are « regulated » by the Pirate Code

It is composed of a given number of empty slots in the form of skulls. That number is determined at the Character's Creation and can further evolve in function of modifications in his or her profile, in particular his or her Fame.

Level of the Shame Gauge

All Pirates have a ground level of two empty slots (unchecked Skulls actually) in their Shame Gauge.

However, the following modificators apply as follows:

In function of the Nerve they Got:
Level of Got a Nerve!Modificator
1 or 2 -1
3 to 8 No modification
9 or 10 +1
In function of their Fame:

At Character's Creation, Fame is still low and thus has no influence on the Shame Gauge. Along with time and a growing Fame, the Shame Gauge can become additional available Skulls as indicated in the following chart:

Total of FameModificator
0 to 200 +1
201 to 500 +2
501 to 1000 +3
1001 to 2000 +4

The meaning of the Fame Lavels indicated here above is further discussed a specific Chapter focused on Fame and Experience. However, let's say at once that - while still living for sure - even a Pirate like the Captain Lamarck never reached 2000 points… Of course now, having become a Pirat of Legend, his Fame surpass that Level by far but, unless his ghost still haunts or comes back in that World, it would be surprising that he gets any particular joy from the fact…

Shame Gauge: how does it work?

On the Pirate's Sheet, which displays up to eight Skulls in the section reserved for the Shame Gauge, the Players let as many Skulls unchecked as what they computed while creating their Character. The number of unchecked Skulls can also evolve as their Fame wanes or waxes, representing at all times the current initial Level of Shame.

In situations where the Level of Shame can be brought to change, some additional Skulls may have to be ckecked. As the Level of Shame is recovered, it cannot become greater than the current initial Level, except in some exceptional circumstances or when the rules expressely prescribe it. This is in most cases a temporary excess.

There is, for the time being, nothing more to kwnow about Shame. The rules for using the Shame Gauge in the course of the Game are detailed in each section or chapter where it is required.
