As his name tells it (Though you'll agree that it is not so obvious to determine in which sort of criole
) Juan Ernesto Barbisurte has got a wild and red beard, of which the locks are in sharp contrast to his hair, carefully tightened in a catogan, and which gives him an rough and impressive look. He mostly stays on his Estate but make a walk through his plantations every morning while he usually spends the afternoon on his Golf (You'll admit that it doesn't fit in the picture one can get from him but this is so anyway
) and the evening on the Verandah, sipping on a cocktail before going to work at his desk in the Mansion; hence, he is not often to be seen in the outside world but, when it happens, he always wear one of his old Captain costume, one being pink and blue with assorted buttons, in the famous « Leisure Star » style, the other one black with inlays of purple and silvered buttons
It is at any rate difficult to miss but it must have been, somewhere in time, the last outcry of Pirate fashion on Santa Cruise and Tortuga!
That excentric side of the Governor of Yellow Lizard's Island may not hide, however, the other features of the Character, rather « castrating » and « confining »: just have a look at how he jealously keeps his daughter out of sight and dangers from the outside, at how he closed Yellow Lizard's Island on itself by explicitly forbiding the islanders to go at sea and to learn how to swim (even if that would more surely come out of his own notorious fear of water!) ; the island itself seems to wither, one could say, from that confinement, as Mould would testify for
Those aspects of the Governor wouldn't be the true reasons why Poerava fell in love with the absolute liberty of sailing the deep seas of the Known World, neither would his own past example, of which aren't many remnants to be seen daily: we know it, it is in Poerava's blood
and what for a blood! However, it is obvious that the Governor's attitude, as well as his example, be it to imitate or reject, have been catalysers. As well as for, another side of our Character is to be evoked, again a catalyser, even if he'S been more or less unaware of its action
For the Governor also has a dark side and quite an obscure past life, which he burried deep in the veils of his memory and his silence. After having searched for a while in his documents, one can only barely get to know he's been a tax collector, he was married and he left everything(or everything left him) quite suddenly to enter in Piracy for a while, not without any success it seems. Then there is the mail with mysterious addressees on Hattea, the drawn maps of the island and of other archipelagos, the attempt to erase Zebra Island of a map, probably off his own hand, etc. One can raise doubts, no fact being available to confirm them however, that he put his foot in quite a short time in quite a few places, which are not always listed among the most « appropriate for sightseeing » in the Known World!
And what does seem to remain of all that? A mature man, excentric and turned onto himself, planter, golf player and penpusher according to the hour of the days which come and go and now all seem to be so similar, as well a man who overloves his daughter and does not necessarily see where her true interest is. But, wouldn't it be to forget about all the rest? Bad deeds maybe
Or could it be that he's trying to get rid of a king of nostalgy from that libertarian and, maybe, libertine era or, even, of the even more burried previous period of his life?
And well, of that man we won't say much more. He plays an authoritarian and castrating role in our Scenario be he here or not in the successive scenes but he's got a depth, which you'll also have the opportunity to use, Friend Game Master, in the numerous « follow-ups » to come after Suzon's Rapt, would they come from us or from yourself!
