Everything starts at the Chedham's Pork Fair
Pigs, eating more or less all and no matter what - well rather no matter what and the waste of the rest or revertedly - are after all not so much affected by the mysterious mould disease which strikes the island. And since the events of the other seasons generally became obsolete (Especially Hollow-Win of which the pumpkins now are ugly and almost smaller as tomatoes…) one would be crazy to miss the event and, indeed, almost the whole island meets for the occasion, even some Curry-Beans coming from behind the behind the Needle Head and the Goats' Pass to sell their pigs, the dirtiest but also the fattest and the tastiest of the island!
There's thus an event worth the celebration each year in autumn on the Yellow Lizard's Island and, indeed, it is practically the only one! It is the potted meat's party, the knuckle of ham's figure of eight, a delight of a whole day focused on mounts of sausages and black pudding, most of the time actually still on their legs but not for so long anymore…
Given in that section are all the details you may need, Friend Game Master, to give a good picture of the installations of and around the fair and to introduce the Scenario in function of the Characters of your Players.
Set-up for the party
But let us come back to the Pork Fair: on the main square, the party is full of drum and ham'n'rum… and of « chubby bottom » - of the young ladies yet to be married in the neighbouring hamlets! But let's not lose the focus there… Games, tournaments, competitions, futile or serious, easy or challenging, or even dangerous, are organised all around Chedham - a merry folly without a break! - and one would be silly not to take part in any of them. One whoop a carnival up on that day to make sure one has his or her lot of fun… That is the occasion of many another occasion!
A circus also has been set up not far in the outskirts of Chedham, at the edge of the Plantation, close to the beach of the same name. It is managed by two twin brothers who are particularly strange and clothed in vivid and loud colours, flashy pink and green with « assorted » glitter and make-up as one would expect. To those who would be interested: they roam around all the day long in order to recruit somebody who would accept to help them as a human cannonball for « fine-tuning » their show… An easy way, though a bit dangerous, to earn the pretty significant amount of sixty Pesetes (fifty-two Pesetes and eight Coinlets after tax – one Pesete having the value of twelve Coinlets – well enough to buy quite a lot of possible things, such as a saber or arapier of average quality, as well as some clothes and other accessories…) and to be allowed a free entry for the first row (as well as for the best exit!) at the evening show which, otherwise, costs eight Coinlets (all tax included) at the entrance.
A strange tradition for an island…
One does not see any ship nor boat either, even for fishing, since, actually, the inhabitants of the Island of the Yellow Lizard are afraid of the sea. They fish, of course, but only from the shore with lines which they throw as far away as they can. An interdiction of which the origin is unknown - everyone here being the descendant of one who came by sea! – leads the islanders to never go out at sea.
There is moreover no more ship on the island, which would be able to navigate, the last hulls having finished rotten or having been used as construction material, even more since the Governor, taking advantage of that feature of the local culture, decided a total banishment of the activities linked to the sea… The Curry-Bean Indians, however, still have some dugouts in their village and they do not hesitate to use them but if they have to come to Chedham, they'll prefer to walk over the Goats' Pass because they know it wouldn't be so welcome to come by sea.
And what about our Players' Characters in there?
Where are the Characters of our Friends the Players? Free choice, however some suggestions; they may on that day:
- Hold a stand or stall
- Participate to the petanque (Be careful! No rum for participants under sixteen!) or knife throwing competition, etc.
- Sell / Buy pigs and pork food
- Do nothing / Be bored (But for that, as we already said, must one be silly!)
- Tease / Be on the pull (Isn't it Poerava, over there, the cute, though still quite young, play mate of the Governor's daughter?…)
- Try to take advantage of the carnival atmosphere to, somewhat in disguise, attempt to closen to the Governor's Mansion in order to to catch a glimpse of his, so is it said, so beautiful daughter, whom he maintains hidden the most he can… (You can even imagine a sub-adventure, based on that idea, to start with quite a bad surprise from the beginning: the said daughter is neither in her appartments, nor in the garden of the plantation… And we'll very soon know why!)
- Etc.
